I recently did 120 staff portraits for Stockholm International School. It was a lot of fun as it wasn’t the usual school photo portrait brief as I got to do quite a bit of natural light photography.
The school were looking for something different to help with their branding and to give them that premium feel so as well as working with some fantastic natural light photography, I hand touched every digital negative from the shoot, working the light and composition.
One of the things I was trying to capture is the personality of each member of staff. I’ve never been a fan of the traditional school (or staff) photo as they typically look like passport photos. There’s so little personality and the lighting is always super bright.
This was probably my favourite photo from the shoot. I particularly like the combination of the colour of her clothes and jewellery. To make the shot feel that little bit more full of life, I brought out the light in her eyes, and I think this pulls you into the portrait.
I definitely don’t think this says “school photo” and to my mind, that’s a good thing. It’s a little different.
